Your Web Hosting Options

Vontainment doesn’t offer hosting ourselves but we do keep a list of great options. We believe that your domain name and your website should both be in your control. Many new clients come to us without access to either their current site or domain and are unable to get it from previous designer. Sad to say it is common in this field. Most Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Fort Myers and North Port businesses don’t have the fund available to pursue legal action especially when they have no contract stating their ownership of the designers work. This means you would need a new domain but your old site could still be live for undetermined amount of time. this poses two issues. You will have to build all your SEO from scratch and your new site will be competing with your old causing confusion.

Vontainment with work with local Southwest Florida businesses who do currently have their own hosting. Though some features and options are depended on what comes with a hosting account. For businesses needing hosting and/or a domain name we can suggest some great options as well as help you set it up.

Registering Your Domain

Many buy domain names from GoDaddy.com. Even we once used them but have come to find their marketing has become to aggressive. We would find random items in our cart, or automatically signed up for free trials that would charge us after they were over. Their site is also slow, and hard to navigate. If you have a goDaddy account that’s fine but if your looking to open an account to buy a domain try these instead:

Namecheap.com

Even though most have only heard of GoDaddy this one is one of the big names who is catching up. They provide lower costs, vastly less marketing ploys, and easy to you site.

Namesilo.com

This is also a larger domain register but also one of the cheapest. We currently use this one, though their site can be a bit harder to navigate then Namecheap, it is still much better then GoDaddy.

Understanding Web Hosting

Web hosting is a service that allows organizations and individuals to post a website or web page onto the Internet. A web host, or web hosting service provider, is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for the website or webpage to be viewed in the Internet. Websites are hosted, or stored, on special computers called servers. When Internet users want to view your website, all they need to do is type your website address or domain into their browser. Their computer will then connect to your server and your webpage’s will be delivered to them through the browser.

Types Of Hosting

  • Shared hosting is similar to renting a workstation in a busy, noisy, open plan office or co-working space. You have all the modern conveniences but you can’t do any makeovers. With a shared hosting plan, all domains share the same server resources, such as RAM (Random Access Memory) and CPU (Central Processing Unit). Because all resources are shared, the cost of shared hosting plans are relatively low but this means that surges in usage can ultimately affect your website’s user experience. Most shared hosting can only handle 20 to 30 concurrent connections. When you consider the average amount of files that make a webpage, and each users concurrent connections most shared hosting begins to greatly slow at 10 visitors and become mostly unusable after 30. As google can make much more concurrent connections when indexing a site this can hurt SEO. These plans can not host most cloud apps.
  • Managed WordPress is a streamlined, optimized hosting platform for building and managing WordPress sites. … “Managed” for WordPress means that the host handles basic hosting administrative tasks, such as installing WordPress, automated daily backups, WordPress core updates and server-level caching. These are WordPress optimized shared hosting plans that can handle more reasonable levels of traffic but comes at a premium monthly price many plans over $50/mo. Though it comes with restrictions on plugins making some features not possible. Hosting more then one site requires a high plan usually and can cost $70/mo or more. You are also restricted to just WordPress.
  • virtual private server (VPS) is a nice step up from shared hosting. Medium sized business will benefit from renting an office within a business park. With a VPS, users are isolated from each other. A VPS hosting plan is the ultimate middle ground between a shared server and a dedicated server. It’s ideal for website owners that need more control, but don’t necessarily need a dedicated server. these are as cheap months starting out as shared, and can be increased on the fly needed by demand. Though they come with a one time setup fee for us to setup all the server software as they come with just the basic OS installed.
  • Dedicated hosting is resenting an entire physical server. This is usually only needed by regional corporations or very niche needs. We would suggest buying and setting a server up in house vs dedicated hosting under most circumstances. As the price to set-up in house is about the monthly cost of dedicated hosting.

There are a few other more niche types that we won’t mention here but you are welcome to contact us to discuss options. Shared hosting is an option for the most simplest sites. We don’t recommend it anymore for anything more then a basic 4 page WordPress site. As for managed WordPress though its good hosting the monthly price makes prefer VPS hosting.

Unlike other options VPS Hosting can run multiple websites, and other software for the same cost as shared hosting. VPS hosting allows on the fly upgrading of the servers Ram, CPU and Hard Drive as your business and traffic grows. the one downside is the initial setup cost. As a VPS is just a blank server with just the basic OS installed we have to set it up. Though the initial cost, it is still cheaper in the first year then Managed Hosting. check out our VPS Hosting Page for more info!
